The Beauty Department

I stumbled upon this fabulous inspirational site for all things fashion and beauty. I love Lauren Conrad's style so it's only fitting that she is one part of the three responsible for such gorgeous content.

Enjoy the eye candy.

Never feed a troll!

I borrowed this from someone today as I love it! So true!

"There is a word you must learn when dealing with people on the Internet. Troll. There are so many trolls out there. These are people who are just rude and like to hurt people for no apparent reason.  The best thing to do with these people is:

1. Laugh at the insane out of control way they choose to express themselves because it has no bearing on reality.

2. Feel sorry for them bacuse they have some incredible hurt in their life they don't know how to handle properly.

3. Delete their comments, ban them, restrict them and basically erase their presence from your page, blog, group, whatever... and from your mind as soon as possible. Oh and never feeed a troll. i.e. don't answer them.

Do you know that when you repeat in your head cruel things that people have said or written to you , your inner being internalizes it , and it cannot distinguish if you are saying it personally to your inner being or if you are saying it as in "I can't believe what this person said." Whether you are saying it to your friends or in your mind, your inner being thinks you are saying it to them. When someone says something cruel and negative to you, do what you can to get it out of your head immediatley, lest it take root. Laugh, say wtf, go put on some lively positive music, hug the kids, pet the dog, paint up a storm, go look at the amazing photos you have taken and totally forget it! At those times I like to look at people like Michael Jackson and think about all the haters they had. Thank god they didn't let the haters stop them."  ~ Melanie U.C.

Focca Photography

Please check out the work of an amazing photographer, Kathy of Focca Photography.
I met with her awhile back to discuss all things photography and we ended up having an amazing afternoon. She took some photos of me and I learned a few things that day. One, it's much easier posing someone else for the camera than the awkward feeling of posing myself. Two, you can take amazing photographs with limited gear. It's how to properly make use of the gear that you own that really counts. Three, some women really can do it all. Kathy is a mother, an artist, a trailblazer, a beauty and a friend. Moving here from Poland, barely knowing a soul or the language and starting out working in the lab, Kathy quickly discovered she too had the trained "eye" that artists speak of. You can learn lighting, aperture, exposure, shutter speed, ISO and strobe but there is nothing out there that can teach you how to shoot from the heart, and how to see the world in a creative light. That is a gift that you either have or you don't. This girl has it. I'm blessed to have met her. When I asked her for some magical advice on my business, all she kept repeating was "girl, you are doing it." Sometimes we are looking for answers that are so simply obvious that we are missing the entire point.

I love this girl.

Coming Soon....

Yesterday I had the absolute pleasure of photographing a maternity session with Elisia and Fernando.
Elisia had contacted me in the summer about booking a session and I'm always curious as to how people find me. She said we had mutual friends whom she had seen me photograph and post on Facebook. I'm always nervous/overprepared/anxious before a shoot, especially when I don't know the clients or the location and lighting. In this business, you really have to be prepared for anything. I learned that quickly in this career of mine.

Elisia and Fern were a dream to photograph. Their home looked like it was out of the pages of a magazine. They are beautiful and stylish people. We hit it off instantly. There is always that awkward period when you first start photographing and posing them. I asked Fern to rest his head on Elisia's shoulder and while I tested my lighting, I felt like he was starting to nod off. I joked with him that I needed him to kiss her shoulder, not rest his nose, because it looked like she had his nose growing out of her shoulder. This erupted into a fit of laughter and then the magic started. It's the moments in between the posed shots that literally grab me, and insist I start snapping.

There is something about being back in Stoney Creek that reminds me of where I came from. We were having coffee and chatting about the old days of highschool, night clubs and who-knows-who. Before I knew it, Fern had Z103.5 blasting and we were drinking wine and ordering pizza. A 9 am shoot turned into dinner time and these are the days that I absolutely love my job.

This year has been trying, exhilarating, wonderful, awful and beautiful all rolled into one. As most of you know, I quit working in an office after 13 years with no plan in sight. Some called me brave. I felt at the time, it was stupid. Who knew that picking up a camera and playing with the settings would lead me to where I am right now. Six months of solid shooting, learning, assisting, reading, crying, rejoicing, and working hard have led me to a full time business. I had to research, buy equipment, learn postprocessing, build a website, figure out accounting, prepare a business plan to receive a grant, present my plan in front of an intimidating panel, design business cards and a logo and pretty much learn everything I have learned in half a year. Most times, if not always, I'm too hard on myself. I never think anything is good enough. I've been told that is the norm in this business. Just when you think you're good, someone else is better. Isn't that always the case in life? Sometimes, good enough has to be enough.

Elisia sent me a lovely note yesterday, saying that I made her feel beautiful in the hectic stage of her third trimester; a time when she was feeling anything less than beautiful. She was so radiant. She said that my photographs made her mom cry. These are the joys I find in photography. To me, this is not a job. This is what I was born to do. We all search for the thing in life that will make us matter. Something to contribute. Something to aspire towards. As this year comes to a close and I'm wrapping up wedding season and a few more family sessions, I sit back and reflect.

There will always be naysayers, negative people and competitors trying to bring you down. I stopped writing my blog because of a couple of nasty comments from insignificant people who haven't found their place in life, or made their mark or found a reason to matter. I received so many emails about wanting to read my blog that I decided to continue with my writing. Writing goes hand in hand with this business. And so, I am back. I'm not only back, I'm back and I'm a better person for all the hardships and triumphs I've had to endure.

Elisia and Fernando, here are some of my favourite photographs of your day. I can't wait until we meet again for our newborn shoot, and to hang out with some great people that I am now proud to call friends. Your love is evident. Your home is warm and welcoming. Your baby will be born into a family full of love and grace.

God Bless you all.

Love,

Wendy

A weekend.....in photos.

I met Chelsea at a Clinique counter months back. We got to chatting and hit it off instantly. She contacted me to do a shoot and I was thrilled. What a beauty this woman is. She has an old soul, an eclectic taste in music and fashion and a kind heart. It's safe to say that her beauty shines from the inside out. I'm quite positive that she has no idea just how stunning she is. She squealed in delight at the few photos I showed her on my camera screen during the shoot. Normally a boudoir shoot would last a couple of hours This one felt like a day hanging out with an old friend. We dined on some of Michael's gourmet soup and chatted about life and it's trials, tribulations and triumphs. Near the end of the shoot, she said told me that she felt that my house was full of love and that today was one of the best experiences of her life.

Vanessa came to me as a recommendation through a mutual videographer friend. She hired me as her wedding photographer and on the sunny brisk morning of Saturday, Michael and I shot engagement photos with her, Jeff and their adorable son in beautiful North York. With the backdrop of buildings and nature, blanketed in the love of this family, their photos turned out amazing.

After a weekend of shooting, spending time with my husband and friends and looking forward to some much needed time off in December I am thankful for so much.  I'm thankful for an amazing mother with whom we have so much life to still share together. I'm thankful for the family that we've formed with Vern, Michael and his family as well as our amazing clients who have turned into great friends. I'm thankful for hard work that has paid off into a lucrative career. I'm thankful to always rise above evil and choose love. I'm thankful to be alive.

Here are some photos from this weekend's shoots. Have a wonderful week, say something important, do something that is kind and give thanks for all that you have.

Much love,

W.
